From contributor m: i have ripped hundreds of douglas fir and western red cedar logs into cants light enough to be flown out by helicopter. i use a 066 for the smaller logs up to 4' diameter and a 088 for the big logs up to 8' diameter all i use is a skip tooth chisel bit chain and take the rakers down a little more .0030 works like a charm.
However when using a chain saw for milling lumber the saw will be ripping which is cutting parallel to the grain of the wood. the angle of the cutting teeth on a ripping chain is much more square than on a standard chain. fortunately you can make a ripping chain for a chainsaw out of a standard chain with some sharpening tools.
