A good hypertufa mix with only fine peat particles and a suitable additive to span the resulting small holes can still be quite strong. fibres are useful but other large aggregates like vermiculite can also be useful. sand will add a lot of strength to hypertufa but also adds a lot of weight.

Aug 23 2010 not all sands contain silica. there are types of sand that are either somehow treated to be silica free or are just naturally so. they are just usually more expensive. if it says silica free or something to that effect then it probably is based on whatever regulations are in place to regulate silica .

Jan 16 2008 i did a search on silica sand on this board and it seems to be recommendedsafe. i found some very finelight silica sand at menards. they do also carry play sand but it had quite a few large-ish rocks and the grain size seemed to vary quite a bit. i have yet to look at home depot. the silica sand at menards just seems so much softerfluffier.

May 24 2015 so the mag float gets shoved into the sand bed and some sand gets caught up in it and scratches the glass. the scratches may be bigger with the black sand as it is not as fine. but i have a huge very fine scratch in one of my tanks that has very fine white sand in it. i have black sand in my 34 and have never noticed any magnetic properties in it.
My imprinting of leaves in hypertufa is not working out too great. i have used various combo's of extra fine perlite sand portland and peat . the peat i have screened through a 13 piece if hardware cloth screening. the results are fair but not as clean looking as billie's pots posted above.
Nov 17 2009 personally when it comes to sand i like regular play sand from home depot. it's very fine and on the lighter side probably bleached. all it takes is a rinse or two and once it settles it looks very nice. 4 for a 50lb. bag too.
